WD (Wild Drawing) nasceu e cresceu em Bali, Indonésia.
Formado em Belas Artes e Artes Aplicadas, começou como artista urbano em 2000 e os seus trabalhos podem ser encontrados na Ásia, Europa e América.
Atualmente, o artista vive e trabalha em Atenas, Grécia.
Depois de uma fase inicial em que explorou o paste up, o stencil e as instalações e murais à mão livre, WD concentra-se, atualmente, em projetos murais nos quais combina a técnica de rolo com o spray.
Influenciado pelos grandes mestres da era Renascentista e a banda desenhada, o seu estilo consiste numa técnica fotorrealista altamente detalhada que utiliza vários elementos existentes ao seu redor, de forma a criar uma harmonia entre a peça e o local.
Fiquem com a sua entrevista.
Antes de mais, fala-nos um pouco sobre ti.
Sou WD, nasci e cresci em Bali, Indonésia, e moro em Atenas, Grécia.
Qual é o significado do teu tag?
WD significa “Wild Drawing'' e tem a ver com as imagens que crescem e florescem entre o cimento, no meio da selva urbana.
Tens formação em arte?
Sou formado em Belas Artes e Artes Aplicadas.
Quando começou o teu interesse pela arte urbana e quais foram as tuas influências na altura?
Comecei a pintar na rua em 2000. O engraçado é que não comecei com graffiti ou murais, mas com faixas. Porque quando eu era pequeno, ficava sempre maravilhado com os banners de cinema pintados à mão. Mas os banners ficavam danificados rapidamente, então decidi pintar diretamente na parede.
Já pintaste em quantos países?
Não sei, mas há definitivamente muitos países em que ainda não fui lá pintar.
Quando pensas regressar a Portugal para pintar um mural grande ou uma empena?
Não sei, mas adoraria voltar! Para uma parede grande alguém tem que te convidar, não é como sair a pintar espontaneamente só por diversão.
Quais são os teus spots / cidades favoritos para pintar?
Os meus lugares favoritos para pintar são os abandonados, é um playground para mim.
Quanto à minha cidade favorita, não tenho nenhuma. Na verdade nunca tenho tempo suficiente para ver a cidade onde pinto, porque o tempo é muito limitado - o horário é quase sempre assim, chegar - pintar até escurecer - sair.
Qual foi o lugar mais incrível em que pintaste?
Em 2008 fui convidado por um festival para uma individual, para pintar num hotel abandonado junto à praia na ilha de Naxos, na Grécia. Apesar de ter sido um projeto intenso - sete murais e uma instalação numa semana - o local e a localização eram realmente incríveis.
Já participaste em vários festivais e exposições. Há algum que destaques em particular?
Eu diria o meu projeto "Os Herdeiros do Fogo'' no contexto do Festival Culturescapes2017, no Museu de História Natural Basel, Suíça. Era sobre o papel do Fogo na história da humanidade. A começar no Big Bang até quando o Homo Sapiens domesticou o fogo e acabou a controlar todo o planeta, com as consequências que vemos e vivenciamos hoje. Pintei tudo, paredes e chão de toda a sala de exposições. Um projeto desafiador e interessante.
Onde vais buscar as influências para as tuas peças?
Muitos dos grandes mestres da era Renascentista que fizeram trompe l'oeil espetaculares - como a obra de Michelangelo na Capela Sistina - tornaram-se uma fonte de inspiração muito importante para mim. Além disso, gosto muito de banda desenhada e graphic novels, de ler e, às vezes, desenhar banda desenhada. Então, artistas como Moebius ou Toppi influenciaram muito o meu trabalho.
Pintas com sketch ou freestyle?
Depende do projeto. Se for um mural grande, preciso fazer um esboço primeiro, mas se for uma peça pequena, então é freestyle.
O que toca na tua playlist quando pintas?
Eu ouço as minhas playlists aleatoriamente, eu gosto realmente do momento em que a música muda repentinamente de um género para outro, mesmo que seja totalmente diferente. Por exemplo, do indie folk ao dub e do hip hop à música clássica.
Como avalias o nível de arte urbana da Grécia?
Acho que as pessoas na Grécia familiarizaram-se com a arte de rua, é por isso que muitos artistas se interessam por esse tipo de arte e entram na cena. Principalmente em Atenas, as paredes, literalmente no centro da cidade, são como uma explosão de cores, o que eu acho muito bonito.
Qual é a tua peça favorita?
A minha peça favorita é o "Four Elements" de 2017, em Atenas. Gostei da complexidade das superfícies e gostei muito do processo de experimentar aqueles pilares da construção.
Quais são seus planos/projetos futuros?
Para já, ainda sou obcecado por arte ótica, pelo que quero explorar mais sobre a ilusão de ótica, experimentar novas possibilidades na criação de espaços ilusórios em murais e pinturas. O plano para o futuro é continuar este processo enriquecido com algumas ideias novas.
Tens alguma história que queiras partilhar?
O que admiro na arte de rua, entre outras coisas, é a sua natureza efémera, nunca se sabe o que vai acontecer no dia seguinte ao término do trabalho. Em 2016 fiz o mural "O conhecimento fala - a sabedoria escuta", em Atenas, que se tornou viral. Alguns meses depois, alguém escreveu a palavra "VIRAL", com letras enormes, em todo o mural. Curiosamente, alguns dias após o incidente, recebi um e-mail de um grupo de estudantes universitários de restauração de arte chamado St.A.Co (Conservadores de Arte de Rua), que pediu permissão para restaurar o mural. E imagine-se, eles passaram 6 meses a restaurá-lo, pois o processo de restauro leva muito tempo.
Existem também alguns casos engraçados. Na maioria dos meus trabalhos, gosto de usar objetos existentes na/ao redor da parede - como janelas, lixo ou plantas - como parte do mural. Lembro-me que, uma vez, havia alguns arbustos que incluí no mural. Um dia depois de terminar o trabalho, voltei para tirar as fotos finais, e alguém, de repente, limpou o local e aparou os arbustos! Mesmo que o seu objetivo fosse "limpar" a vista à frente do mural, no final, ele fez com que parecesse estranho. Mas essa é a beleza da arte de rua, no fim de contas.

WD (Wild Drawing) was born and raised in Bali, Indonesia. Graduated in Fine Arts and Applied Arts, he started as an urban artist in 2000 and his works can be found in Asia, Europe and America. Currently, the artist lives and works in Athens, Greece. After an initial phase in which he explored paste up, stencil and freehand installations and murals, WD is currently focusing on mural projects in which he combines the roller technique with spray. Influenced by the great masters of the Renaissance era and comics, his style consists of a highly detailed photorealistic technique that uses various existing elements around, in order to create harmony between the piece and the place. First of all, tell us a little about yourself.
Hi! I’m WD, born and raised in Bali, Indonesia and I'm based in Athens, Greece.
What is the meaning of your tag?
WD stands for “Wild Drawing'' and it has to do with the images that growing and blooming among the cement, in the middle of the wild urban jungle.
Do you have an art background?
I hold degrees in both Fine Arts and Applied Arts.
When did your interest in street art start and what were your influences at the time?
I started painting on the street in 2000. The funny thing is that I didn't start with graffiti or murals, but with banners. Because when I was a little, I was always amazed by hand-painted cinema banners. But the banners were getting damaged quickly so I decided to paint directly on the wall.
In how many countries have you painted?
I don’t know, but there are definitely a lot of countries I haven’t been there to paint yet.
When do you plan to return to Portugal to paint a large wall or a gable?
I don't know but I'd love to come back! For a large wall someone has to invite you, it's not like going out painting spontaneously just for fun. What are your favourite places / cities to paint?
My favourite places to paint are the abandones, it's a playground for me.
As for my favourite city, I don't have one. Actually I never have enough time to see the city where I paint as the time is so limited - the schedule almost always goes like this, arrive - paint until dark - leave.
What's the most amazing place you've ever painted?
In 2008 I was invited by a festival for a solo show, to paint in an abandoned hotel next to the beach on Naxos island, Greece. Even if it was an intense project - seven murals and one installation in one week - the spot and the location were really amazing.
You've participated in several festivals and exhibitions. Are there any that stand out in particular?
I would say my project "The Heirs of Fire'' in the context of Culturescapes2017 Festival, at the Natural History Museum Basel, Switzerland. It was about the role of Fire in human history. Starting from the Big Bang to how Homo Sapiens domesticated fire and ended up controlling the entire planet, with the consequences we see and experience today. I had painted all over, walls & floor the whole exhibition hall. A challenging and cool project.
Where do you get the influences for your pieces?
Many great masters of the Renaissance era who made spectacular trompe l'oeil - like Michelangelo's work in the Sistine Chapel - became a very important source of inspiration for me. Apart from that, I really like comics and graphic novels, reading and sometimes drawing comics, so artists like Moebius or Toppi have greatly influenced my work.
Do you sketch or freestyle?
It depends on the project. If it's a large mural, I need to make a sketch first, but if it's a small piece then it's freestyle.
What plays on your playlist when you paint?
I randomly listen to my playlists, I really enjoy the moment when music suddenly changes from one genre to another even if it's totally different. For example, from indie folk to dub and from hip hop to classical music.
How do you rate the level of street art in Greece?
I think people in Greece have become familiar with street art, that’s why many artists are interested in this kind of art and join the scene. Especially in Athens walls, literally in the city center, are just like an explosion of colours, which I think is very beautiful.
What is your favourite piece?
My favourite piece is the "Four Elements", 2017 in Athens. I liked the complexity of the surfaces and really enjoyed the process of experimenting with those pillars of the construction.
What are your future plans / projects?
Until now I am still obsessed with optical art, so I want to explore more about optical illusion, try new possibilities in creating illusory spaces in murals and paintings. The plan for the future is to continue this process enriched with some fresh ideas.
Do you have a story you want to share?
What I admire in street art among others is its ephemeral nature, you never know what will happen the day after you finish the work. In 2016 I made the mural "Knowledge speaks - Wisdom listens" in Athens, which became viral. A couple of months later someone wrote the word "VIRAL", with huge letters, all over the mural. Interestingly, a few days after the incident I was emailed by a group of University students majoring in art restoration named St.A.Co (Street Art Conservators), who asked for permission to restore the mural. And imagine, they spent 6 months restoring it as the process of restoration takes a long time.
There are also some funny cases. In most of my works I like to use objects existing on/around the wall - like windows, trash or plants - as part of the mural. I remember once, there were some bushes that I had included in the mural. The day after I had finished the work I came back to take the final photos, and imagine, someone had suddenly cleaned the place and trimmed the bushes! Even if his purpose was to "clean" the view in front of the mural, he finally made it look weird. But that's the beauty of street art after all.
