In 2024, I met the Brazilian Ticiano Rottenstein at the open day at Armazém 56 – Arte Sx.
This year, I returned to the place hoping to find another artist that I could interview in one of the blog's various segments.
When I entered the pavilion I was immediately absorbed by a photograph of Bairro da Jamaica which, after all, was a painting by Pedro Américo.
Born in Seixal, this design graduate, illustrator and painter often uses the municipality's landscapes in his paintings.
Pedro Américo has already collaborated with CES (an artist who I also interviewed and who I later invited to participate in my Jam da Vizinhança).
There I also crossed paths with Daniela Costa (another of my guests at Jam da Vizinhança) who was concluding her artistic residency in that space at Seixal City Hall dedicated to contemporary visual arts.
Pedro Américo
Born in Seixal, he has a degree in Design from the Faculty of Architecture of the University of Lisbon.
In secondary school he followed the visual arts, dedicating himself to what he really liked to do. It was at Escola Secundária Manuel Cargaleiro, in the Drawing discipline, that he received the essential foundations, tools and launching pad for the world of arts.
In addition to his training, he has a special passion for illustration and painting, areas that complement and enrich his creative vision.
Seixal served as the setting for several of his paintings, having been the winner of one of the editions of Drive In Arte.
During the year 2024, he was one of the artists who took part in the 4th artistic residency at ARMAZÉM 56 - ARTE SX, a space dedicated to contemporary visual arts.
What are the influences of your art?
I find inspiration in everyday life, in the places I frequent, in simple moments. However, I'm not always attentive, you have to be present to notice the beauty of these moments. In addition to this, I have some artists whose art influenced me a lot, such as Brett Wong, Aron Wiesenfeld, Bo Bartlett, CES Showdibola and D’LYRU. ;)
What material do you prefer to work with?
Watercolors! I take them with me everywhere, to record moments and places or to draw whatever comes to my imagination. Because they are quick to work with and because you can obtain different types of stains and strokes using the same brush.
For works where I dedicate more time and work on realism, I prefer acrylic.
Do you like “travelling” through imaginary worlds?
Of course. It is in these worlds that I find inspiration to create illustrations with beings fantastic, surrealistic landscapes and much more! Whether in the graphic diary or on the screen.
Do you plan on moving from the studio to the street?
Yes, without a doubt. Being able to paint on a large mural is one of my goals. Who knows, maybe this year …
What are your future plans/projects?
I aim to create a collaborative exhibition with several works by artists from Seixal, creating a fusion of styles, from classical painting to graffiti.
