Foi nas ruas e edifícios abandonados do Cacém que comecei a fotografar as peças de STAY.

Na altura, andava a estruturar as ideias para o lançamento do meu site/blog e troquei umas impressões com o writer / artista, que me aconselhou a separar as temáticas (como o faz nas suas duas contas de instagram (para o graffiti e street art).

Depois de ter ficado impressionado com a sua participação no mural de tributo ao falecido Sadhe, fiquei estupefacto com o retrato que fez do rapper The Notorious B.I.G..

Quando nos conhecemos num abandonado, durante a Covid, lancei-lhe o convite para a entrevista. Como o seu foco eram os estudos, disse-me que ficava para mais tarde.

Finalmente chegou o momento oportuno e STAY decidiu avançar com um Secret Spot e a sua entrevista.

Qual o significado do teu tag?

É exatamente o da tradução para Português, Ficar. Surgiu quando tinha por volta de 12 anos, na procura de um novo nome com esse mesmo propósito, ter um significado. Esta ideia pode depois ser expandida para se apropriar a vários contextos.

Tens formação em arte?

Sim, tenho formação em design geral, onde uma das vertentes é o gráfico, apesar de já desenhar graffiti desde o 2º ciclo.

Quando começou o teu interesse pelo graffiti e quais foram as tuas influências?

Começou nas viagens de carro pela IC-19 e de comboio na Linha de Sintra ao olhar pela janela e descodificar as letras escritas nas paredes.

As influências que mais me marcaram quando era criança foram os DWS e Joker. Rest in Peace Joker.

Quais são os teus spots / cidades preferidos?

Eu gosto de tudo, mas gosto mais de dar spots onde depois vou passar e ver as minhas peças.

Não.

Wall of fame, street bombing ou train bombing?

Tudo um pouco até enjoar, depois é trocar.

Como é o teu processo criativo e onde vais buscar as inspirações para as tuas peças?

O meu processo segue o standart, ter uma ideia, desenha-la, iterar até alcançar algo diferente e depois praticar. Como influências, inicialmente, pelo que via na rua. Atualmente, vou a internet.

Preferes lettering ou characters?

A mistura dos dois acho que dá o equilíbrio ideal.

Quais são os ingredientes para um bom dia de pinturas?

Missão bem estudada e executada juntamente com um bom acompanhamento para também criar um bom convívio.

Qual é o melhor parceiro de pinturas?

O escadote telescópico.

Pintas com sketch ou freestyle?

Por norma, sketch memorizado. Se for para inventar algo novo, com sketch em mão.

O que toca na tua playlist quando pintas?

O ritmo de uma boa conversa.

Como descreves o panorama atual do graffiti em Portugal?

Mais parado a nível geral, mas com novos jogadores mais novos.

Qual é o teu top 3 de writers portugueses?

Há muita gente boa, é difícil hierarquizar só 3.

E de writers estrangeiros?

A mesma coisa. Ao nível a que o graff está, é difícil alguém destacar-se muito.

Com que writer gostarias de fazer uma peça conjunta?

Infelizmente com o Joker, por ter sido quem mais me influenciou no início, mas já não é possível.

Tens uma peça preferida?

O último kingsize que dei com o Ridus na linha. Rest in Peace my Friend.

Quais são os teus planos / projetos futuros?

Agora, durante uns tempos, tirar o pé do acelerador, parar e depois voltar com mais inspiração.

Queres partilhar alguma história?

Uma que nunca mais me esqueço, pela adrenalina, foi com o Caeno. No meio da IC-19 na Damaia, ao sábado por volta das 00, onde pintámos uns acrílicos transparentes. Ao acabar a pintura, veio uma carripana com 7 polícias que parou ao nosso lado, onde o Caeno diz: "Olha os homens!". E eu "Bora, bora!". Até hoje, não sei como me safei desse cenário.

A toda a gente com quem já pintei, pinto e pintarei. Todos eles moldam a minha experiência dentro do mundo do graffiti.

It was in the abandoned streets and buildings of Cacém that I began photographing STAY's pieces. At the time, I was structuring the ideas for the launch of my site/blog and I exchanged some impressions with the writer/artist, who advised me to separate the themes (as he does on his two Instagram accounts (for graffiti and street art). After being impressed by his participation in the tribute mural to the late Sadhe, I was astonished by the portrait he made of the rapper The Notorious B.I.G.. When we met in an abandoned building, during Covid, I invited him to an interview. Since his focus was on his studies, he told me he would wait for a later time. Finally the right moment arrived and STAY decided to go ahead with a Secret Spot and his interview.

What does your tag mean?

It's exactly the Portuguese translation, Ficar. It came about when I was around 12 years old when I was looking for a new name with the same purpose: to have a meaning. This idea can then be expanded to suit various contexts.

Do you have a background in art?

Yes, I have a degree in general design, one of which is graphics, although I've been drawing graffiti since I was in high school.

When did your interest in graffiti begin and what were your influences?

It started while driving along the IC-19 and by train on the Sintra Line, looking out of the window and decoding the letters written on the walls.

The influences that most marked me as a child were DWS and Joker. Rest in Peace Joker.

What are your favorite spots / cities?

I like everything, but I like the spots where I go to see my pieces.

Are you part of a crew?

No.

Wall of fame, Street bombing or Train bombing?

Everything until I get sick of it, then I switch.

What's your creative process like and where do you get the inspiration for your pieces?

My process is standard: I have an idea, I draw it, I iterate until I achieve something different and then I practice. Initially, I was influenced by what I saw on the street. Nowadays, I go online.

Do you prefer lettering or characters?

I think a mixture of the two gives the ideal balance.

What are the ingredients for a good day's painting?

A well-studied and executed mission, along with good accompaniment to create a good atmosphere.

What is your best painting partner?

The telescopic ladder.

Do you paint with sketch or freestyle?

As a rule, memorized sketches. If I'm inventing something new, sketch in hand.

What plays on your playlist when you paint?

The rhythm of a good conversation.

How would you describe the current graffiti scene in Portugal?

More stagnant in general, but with newer players.

What's your top 3 Portuguese writers?

There are a lot of good people, it's hard to rank just 3

What about foreign writers?

Same thing. At the level graff is at, it's hard for anyone to stand out

Which writers would you like to do a joint piece with?

Unfortunately with Joker, because he influenced me the most in the beginning, but it's no longer possible.

Do you have a favorite piece?

The last kingsize I did with Ridus on the line. Rest in Peace my Friend.

What are your future plans / projects?

Now, for a while, to take my foot off the gas, stop and then come back with more inspiration.

Any stories you'd like to share?

One that I'll never forget, because of the adrenaline rush, was with Caeno. In the middle of the IC-19 in Damaia, on a Saturday at around 00:00, we were painting transparent acrylics. As we finished painting, a van with seven policemen pulled up next to us, and Caeno said: “Look at the men!”. And I said “Bora, bora!”. To this day, I don't know how I got out of that scenario.
