Recentemente, fui abordado pelo SENHOR no Instagram. Pretendia dar a conhecer um pouco mais do seu trabalho (nomeadamente o seu projeto Protect the Seed) e divulgar uma futura exposição a solo e, nesse sentido, gostava de dar um entrevista ao meu blog.

Artista visual com trabalhos na área da ilustração, arte urbana, animação e cenografia, Tomás Richter aka SENHOR é formado em cenografia e tem vindo a espalhar as suas "plantas malucas e objetos estranhos" por abandonados e hall of fames, na companhia da sua crew ou de La Kase.

Como tive oportunidade de lhe dizer, seguia o seu trabalho há uns anos e já tinha tirado fotografias a algumas das suas peças (inclusive a uma que tinha num disco externo há bastante tempo sem conseguir identificar a sua autoria).

Depois de ter recebido as respostas que agora publico, já me cruzei com o meu convidado quando veio pintar um Secret Spot (ainda não publicado) e na Puzzle Jam de Funky, que teve lugar em Lagos.

A sua inspiração vem da beleza da natureza e da mistura dinâmica da cultura underground e dos universos da banda desenhada.

O artista faz parte dos XIX COLLECTIVE.

Qual é o significado do teu tag?

O nome SENHOR surgiu da junção das letras que mais gostava, "SR". Com o tempo, comecei a dar-lhe um significado mais profundo, ligado à ideia de identidade e presença. Também gosto da ironia do nome, que pode ser interpretado de várias formas, dependendo do contexto.  

Tens formação em arte?  

Sim, licenciei-me em Cenografia pela ESTC e estudei Design Gráfico na World Academy e na Escola Artística António Arroio. Estas formações ajudaram-me a desenvolver um olhar mais amplo sobre composição, espaço e narrativa visual.  

Quando começou o teu interesse pelo graffiti / street art e quais foram as tuas influências na altura?  

O interesse surgiu na adolescência, mas foi através do MONK e do ALIVE (tag da altura) que comecei a levar o graffiti mais a sério. Vi-os pintar de perto, e essa experiência direta teve um grande impacto na minha vontade de explorar este meio.  

Já participaste em diversos festivais / jams. Há algum que destaques em particular?  

Destaco o Boom Festival 2023, onde fiz uma colaboração com o LA KASE num mural de 60 metros em live painting. A experiência foi intensa, não só pelo tamanho da peça, mas também pela interação constante com o público do Boom, que tem uma energia muito especial.

Os XIX ART COLLECTIVE funcionam como uma crew?  

O XIX é mais um coletivo artístico do que uma crew tradicional de graffiti. O XIX ART COLLECTIVE é uma plataforma que apoia o trabalho artístico em diversos meios. Trabalhamos em diversas áreas – ilustração, design, fotografia, muralismo , animação, formação, educação. Já desenvolvemos três publicações físicas e organizamos eventos que unem diferentes formas de expressão artística.  

Fala-nos sobre o projeto PROTECT THE SEED.  

PROTECT THE SEED é mais do que uma exposição. O projeto pretende levar o meu trabalho aos jovens, através de workshops e o desenvolvimento conjunto de projetos (criação de murais, livro de ilustração e exposição interativa), com o objetivo de introduzi-los ao meio artístico e incentivar novas formas de expressão. É uma forma de plantar sementes para o futuro da arte.  

Numa palavra, como descreves o teu estilo?  

Orgânico.  

Onde vais buscar as inspirações para as tuas peças?  

À natureza, à ficção científica, o universo dos comics e as texturas urbanas. Gosto da ideia de fusão entre o natural e o artificial.  

Qual foi o local mais incrível em que já pintaste?  

O sítio mais louco em que pintei até agora foi numa viagem que fiz à Grécia, numa ilha chamada Egina. Repleta de hotéis e resorts abandonados, um paraíso para quem curte de uma exploração.

Pintas com sketch ou freestyle?  

Depende do projeto. Para murais grandes, gosto de ter um sketch-base, mas deixo sempre espaço para a improvisação.  

O que não pode faltar num bom dia de pinturas?  

Boa música, uma carne na brasa, uma paleta bem escolhida e paciência para lidar com imprevistos.  

O que toca na tua playlist em momentos de criação?  

Vai desde hip-hop a eletrónica experimental e rock instrumental.

Como classificas o nível do graffiti / street art tuga?  

Está cada vez mais forte e diversificado. Há talento e identidade própria e isso reflete-se na projeção internacional de vários artistas.  

Qual é o teu top 3 de writers / artistas nacionais?  

É uma pergunta difícil, porque existem vários que me influenciam ou que eu sinto que têm um trabalho completo. Vou deixar aqui uma lista sem ordem de preferência:

Vhils, Mário Belém, Unidigrazz, BLE, SUDAE, OTMS, WRS, DTLS.

E de writers / artistas estrangeiros?  

Posso destacar desde já o LA KASE, que não só me influencia diretamente como acho um artista incrível. Além dele, RIOTS, SLAWN, Moedius e REVOK são grandes referências para mim.

Com que outro writer / artista gostarias de fazer um trabalho conjunto?  

Não tenho nenhum artista que gostava de trabalhar em específico, deixo as minhas colaborações acontecer naturalmente com quem conheço e tenho uma relação pessoal.

A animação para videoclips e outros projetos é algo a continuar?  

Sim! Trabalhei recentemente em cenários para o filme de stopmotion Sequential, e quero continuar a explorar essa área. 

Quais são os teus planos / projetos futuros?  

Expandir o PROTECT THE SEED para novos formatos e continuar a desenvolver projetos multidisciplinares, misturando muralismo, ilustração e animação.  

Tens alguma história que queiras partilhar?  

Tenho várias, mas já que falei do Boom Festival, lembro-me de um momento insólito enquanto pintava o mural. Uma rapariga estrangeira aproximou-se e pediu para pintar sobre a minha peça. Quando recusei educadamente, ela, indignada, pegou numa lata de spray e, sem hesitar, pintou a própria cara de azul. Fiquei sem saber como reagir, e antes que pudesse dizer algo, ela simplesmente desapareceu na multidão, como se nada tivesse acontecido. Foi um daqueles episódios surreais que só o ambiente do Boom pode proporcionar.

I was recently contacted by SENHOR on Instagram. I wanted to share a little more about his work (especially his Protect the Seed project) and promote an upcoming solo exhibition, and in this sense, I would like to give an interview for my blog.

A visual artist with work in the areas of illustration, urban art, animation and scenography, Tomás Richter, aka SENHOR, has a degree in scenography and has been spreading his "crazy plants and strange objects" in abandoned buildings and hall of famers, in the company of his crew or La Kase.

As I had the opportunity to tell him, I had been following his work for a few years and had already taken photographs of some of his pieces (including one that I had on an external drive for a long time without being able to identify its author).

After receiving the responses that I am posting now, I met my guest when he came to paint a Secret Spot (not yet published) and at Funky,'s Puzzle Jam, which took place in Lagos.

His inspiration comes from the beauty of nature and the dynamic mix of underground culture and comic book universes.

The artist is part of XIX COLLECTIVE.

What is the meaning of your tag? The name SENHOR came from the combination of the letters I liked the most, "SR". Over time, I started to give it a deeper meaning, linked to the idea of ​​identity and presence. I also like the irony of the name, which can be interpreted in several ways, depending on the context.   Do you have a background in art?  

Yes, I graduated in Scenography from ESTC and studied Graphic Design at the World Academy and the António Arroio Art School. These courses helped me develop a broader view of composition, space and visual narrative.  

When did you become interested in graffiti / street art and who were your influences at the time?  

You became interested in graffiti when you were a teenager, but it was through MONK and ALIVE (the tag at the time) that I started to take graffiti more seriously. I saw them paint up close, and that direct experience had a big impact on my desire to explore this medium.  

You have participated in several festivals / jams. Is there one that stands out in particular?  

I would like to highlight Boom Festival 2023, where I collaborated with LA KASE on a 60-meter live painting mural. The experience was intense, not only because of the size of the piece, but also because of the constant interaction with the Boom audience, which has a very special energy.

Does XIX ART COLLECTIVE work as a crew?   XIX is more of an artistic collective than a traditional graffiti crew. XIX ART COLLECTIVE is a platform that supports artistic work in various media. We work in several areas – illustration, design, photography, muralism, animation, training, education. We have already developed three physical publications and organize events that bring together different forms of artistic expression.   Tell us about the PROTECT THE SEED project.   PROTECT THE SEED is more than an exhibition. The project aims to bring my work to young people, through workshops and the joint development of projects (creation of murals, illustration book and interactive exhibition), with the aim of introducing them to the artistic world and encouraging new forms of expression. It is a way of planting seeds for the future of art.   In a word, how would you describe your style?   Organic.   Where do you find the inspiration for your pieces?  

To nature, science fiction, the world of comics and urban textures. I like the idea of ​​merging the natural and the artificial.

What's the most incredible place you've ever painted? The craziest place I've painted so far was on a trip to Greece, on an island called Aegina. Full of abandoned hotels and resorts, it's a paradise for those who enjoy exploring. Do you paint with sketches or freestyle? It depends on the project. For large murals, I like to have a basic sketch, but I always leave room for improvisation. What can't be missing on a good day of painting?

Good music, grilled meat, a well-chosen palette and patience to deal with unexpected events.

What's on your playlist when you're creating?

It ranges from hip-hop to experimental electronics and instrumental rock.

How do you rate the level of Portuguese graffiti / street art?

It is increasingly strong and diverse. There is talent and a unique identity, and this is reflected in the international projection of several artists.

Who are your top 3 national writers / artists?

It's a difficult question, because there are several who influence me or who I feel have a complete body of work. I'll leave a list here, without any order of preference: Vhils, Mário Belém, Unidigrazz, BLE, SUDAE, OTMS, WRS, DTLS.

And foreign writers / artists?

I can already highlight LA ​​KASE, who not only directly influences me but I think is an incredible artist. In addition to him, RIOTS, SLAWN, Moedius and REVOK are great references for me.

Which other writer/artist would you like to work with?

I don't have any specific artist that I would like to work with; I let my collaborations happen naturally with those I know and have a personal relationship with.

Is animation for music videos and other projects something you want to continue?  

Yes! I recently worked on sets for the stopmotion film Sequential, and I want to continue exploring that area.  

What are your future plans / projects?  

Expanding PROTECT THE SEED into new formats and continuing to develop multidisciplinary projects, mixing muralism, illustration and animation.  

Do you have any stories you would like to share?  

I have several, but since I mentioned Boom Festival, I remember an unusual moment while I was painting the mural. A foreign girl approached me and asked to paint over my piece. When I politely refused, she indignantly grabbed a spray can and, without hesitation, painted her own face blue. I didn't know how to react, and before I could say anything, she simply disappeared into the crowd, as if nothing had happened. It was one of those surreal episodes that only the Boom atmosphere can provide.
