O battle rap tem vindo a crescer e a evoluir de forma significativa em Portugal e a tornar-se num fenómeno cultural que reflete a diversidade e a riqueza do rap e da cena hip hop.
Este estilo de competição onde MCs se enfrentam, procurando surpreender o adversário e conquistar o público, é caracterizado pela improvisação, criatividade lírica e habilidade de resposta rápida.

As batalhas abordam uma variedade de temas, desde questões sociais e políticas até histórias pessoais e críticas à sociedade. Os rappers utilizam as suas letras para expressar indignação, contar as suas experiências ou mesmo fazer humor, incorporando muitas vezes referências culturais e locais que ressoam no público.
Além de serem uma forma de entretenimento, as batalhas de rap também funcionam como uma plataforma de expressão para a juventude, abordando problemas como desigualdade, racismo e identidade, e promovendo um sentido de comunidade, onde MCs e fãs se conectam através da música e da arte.
As plataformas digitais, como o YouTube, desempenham um papel crucial, permitindo que as batalhas sejam assistidas por um público mais vasto, contribuindo para a popularização do género e oferecendo um palco para novos talentos se destacarem.
Foi através do Bugster que tive um primeiro contacto com este fenómeno e com a Liga Knockout. Mais tarde descobri o Instagram da Roda o centro e diversas outras espalhadas por Lisboa, Setúbal ou Barreiro. Mas foi em Almada que lhe tomei o gosto, quando comecei a assistir às battles promovidas pela Gigantes à Margem (com Aleixo, Kota Phill e Caio no comando).
Todas as sextas feiras, ao fim da tarde, a Praça São João Batista torna-se numa arena carregada de uma energia pulsante que contagia quem por lá passa. Ao som do beat ou à capela, dois ou mais MCs mostram as suas skills e cospem barras (em duas rondas) rodeados por uma multidão que aplaude, incita e chega a pedir sangueeeee! quando as batalhas são renhidas e pedem por uma réplica de desempate.
Os beefs resolvem-se no final das rondas e alguns amargos de boca servem de catalisador para a sexta seguinte, no lugar do costume.
Foi na Gigantes que conheci GODTELEX, KOYOTTE e PERIGO, os meus próximos entrevistados. A entrevista, como não podia deixar de ser, foi gravada na Praça São João Batista, antes de mais uma edição da roda.
Fiquem a conhecê-los um pouco melhor e a esta cultura do freestyle.
Fala-nos um pouco sobre ti.
GODTELEX
O meu nome é GODTELEX, tenho 24 anos, sou artista de rua. Todos os dias vou para a street fazer o meu hustle, cantar, fazer karaoke, sou uma jukebox humana (não é só fazer freestyle), tenho vivido disso há seis meses. E é isso, sou MC de batalha e sou nómada, vivo de Norte a Sul deste país, sou um MC nacional.
KOYOTTE
Para já, muito boa tarde, KOYOTTE… 2815 Margem Suliana. Artista de beatbox, back vocal de ragga e battle rapper. Props à GIGANTES À MARGEM, à Tribo, ao Alegro.

Salve, salve família. MC Perigo na voz aqui. Sou artista, MC de batalha, músico, compositor, organizador de uma batalha no Brasil. Rimo aqui nas batalhas de Portugal. E é isso aí.
Como é que surgiu o teu nome?
GODTELEX
O meu nome surgiu na primeira vez que eu me apresentei às batalhas. Eu apresentei-me na Free Punch, por aconselhamento do Valério da Rapromiss. Eu apresentei-me lá e ia escrever David Teles na folha e vi que toda a gente tinha nomes nada a ver, que pareciam nicknames de jogos e eu associei ao nickname de jogo que tinha no CS. Então, ficou assim, GODTELEX MC.
KOYOTTE
Os bófias quando passavam lá na zona, isto quando um gajo era puto e fazia bombas de prata e ácido no garrafão, os bófias passavam e um gajo mandava os garrafões. E fiquei conhecido também mais por causa do Coiote, pelos desenhos animados, porque ele fazia as bombas contra o Papa Léguas. E é um animal com que eu também me identifico.
PERIGO
PERIGO… a história é longa, mas eu vou dar uma encurtada aqui. Certo dia eu estava de rolê com os meus amigos e aí eu fui usar a casa de banho e eles me apressaram, porque saíram todos antes de mim, e eu saí de lá metendo o louco em todo o mundo e aí um dos condutores de um dos autocarro que estava lá me chamou de perigoso e aí virou PERIGO para sempre.

Quando surgiu o teu interesse pelo Rap e mais em concreto pelo Freestyle?
GODTELEX
Há cerca de 2 anos em Janeiro, quando eu me cruzei com o Valério no Núcleo (no A70) que era em Xabregas e foi fechado pela polícia. Era um granda spot do mundo hardcore que foi abatido. Eu cruzei-me lá com o Valério no dia dos meus anos e o Valério viu-me lá no Open Mic e aconselhou-me a ir às batalhas, porque disse que rimava bem, e eu comecei aí.
KOYOTTE
A minha paixão pelo Freestyle já vem desde 2003/2004. Na altura, um que era o Perigo Público foi uns dos primeiros aí no freestyle (granda props). Tinhas poucas plataformas, não havia o Youtube, era o H2tuga, e assistia desde miúdo. E só agora, passados muitos anos, é que eu investi mais no battle rap.
Em relação ao artista, seja de beatbox ou ragga, comecei com 14 aninhos, aí pelas ruas, tive showcases através do Del Tó, pessoal aí da Margem Sul também.
Battle rap tenho investido agora nestes últimos 5 meses e tenho curtido mesmo.
PERIGO
Bom, eu desde muito novo já escutava muito Rap, por parte do meu irmão mais velho, que dentro de casa ele soltava só Rap. Então, já desde muito novo eu me interesso por Rap. E nas batalhas eu me envolvi no começo de 2018. Comecei rimando de brincadeira, não querendo muita coisa, só porque eu gostava mesmo de fazer um Rap, umas rimas, e acabou que eu criei mais gosto por isso e agora eu levo muito mais a sério do que quando eu comecei.

De Norte a Sul, em quantas batalhas já participaste?
GODTELEX
Em 14 rodas diferentes. É por isso que eu digo que sou dos mais corridos deste país. Acho que existem 20 rodas ou 21 e eu acho que não fui a 5 ou 6. Ainda só não fui à zona Sul. Se eu for aqui a citar individualmente ainda me vou perder.
KOYOTTE
Props à Gigantes à Margem. Margem Sul claro, obviamente. Em 4 meses, a primeira vez que fui campeão a solo foi pela Gigantes à Margem. Tribo, Capital Lisabona, Batalha do Alegro em Setúbal, Batalha do Barreiro e a Batalha da Estrutural também, boss mesmo. São algumas das que eu estou aí firmeza.
PERIGO
Bom, eu estou há pouco tempo aqui. Então, dá até para eu mandar um salve para as Batalha que eu já me colei: um salve para a Batalha Gigantes à Margem, Batalha da Tribo, Batalha da Estrutural, Batalha do Barreiro, Batalha da Street Tag, Roda ao centro, … E se tiver alguma que eu esqueci aí, perdão. Eu sei que foi mau aí. Umas 7 ou 8 batalhas.
Quais é que consideras que são os teus pontos fortes?
GODTELEX
Os meus pontos fortes? Ser imprevisível, que até eu fico fascinado com o que dou como resposta. Tem sido mais na base da resposta do que no ataque. Acho que sou melhor MC quando estou em posição desvantajosa. Então, ya, sinto-me mais forte quando estou a perder.
KOYOTTE
Mais à base da postura. A vocalização também conta muito. Ideologia e referências.
PERIGO
Creio que os meus pontos fortes são a presença de palco, entrega de rima e bastante conteúdo.

Onde vais buscar as inspirações para as tuas rimas?
GODTELEX
Em mim. E é o ponto. Não tenho ninguém em que me inspire. Inspiro-me em todas as pessoas que me rodeiam e que me motivam, só isso. E considero que tenho um bocado de cultura geral, então posso debater sobre vários assuntos.
KOYOTTE
Quem vê as minhas batalhas sabe as referências. E em relação a MCs também não vou dizer aqui, quem sabe sabe. Mas, epá, motivação é nas ruas e no dia a dia, no que eu vejo os outros a passarem e até eu próprio. É aí que que me agarro e motivo, no dia a dia das ruas e nas vidas de cada um.
PERIGO
Eu tenho como inspiração muitos rappers como eu, também de pele preta, como Racionais, Djonga, BK’, entre outros. E eu também tenho muitas referências dentro da minha casa. Então, eu sinto muitas coisas que o meu pai me fala e eu creio que é muito nítido isso. Porque às vezes eu falo algumas coisas e muitas pessoas não entendem onde pegou. Mas é isso aí.

Como é que se treina para ter esse flow?
GODTELEX
Eu não treino, eu trabalho com isto todos os dias agora. Então, é meio que a minha obrigação a todo o momento estar a melhorar passo a passo ou, pelo menos, tentar manter um nível que eu considero aceitável. Quando estou a cantar com a coluna eu consigo perceber se está a soar bem ou não e ter uma perceção maior daquilo que eu estou a fazer do que quando estou a rimar com a minha própria voz.
E também não tenho tantos entraves quando estou a rimar com a coluna, porque não preciso de rimar tão alto. Então, consigo fazer coisas melhores.
KOYOTTE
Na vida, mesmo que tenhas talento, sem treino não há nada. Tens que treinar sempre, tens sempre que rimar, a andar, nem que seja a cagar, a cozinhar, tens sempre que rimar e apanhar o nível todos os dias, nem que seja com os teus tropas na rua, seja onde for. Tens sempre que treinar, sempre, que isso dá frutos.
PERIGO
Ya, eu concordo até com o Koyote. Sinceramente, eu lembro a frase do Zuluzão que “treino é jogo, jogo é guerra”. Então, eu sempre estou rimando sozinho comigo mesmo.
Também levo um desafio para mim, rimar um beat inteiro fluentemente sem repetir muitas palavras. Isso é um treinamento que eu acho muito bom para mim e importante. E é isso mesmo, sempre treinar que você sempre vai estar evoluindo.
O que é que toca na tua playlist?
GODTELEX
Tudo. Eu sou tipo… tem a ver muito com o meu mood. Eu posso ouvir Hard Techno, Hardcore, Trance, tudo aquilo que é música. Eu sou apaixonado por música.
Não existe música má, porque a música é uma expressão de arte, então eu gosto de ouvir tudo aquilo que é música.
KOYOTTE
Vários. Sendo sincero, Gospel, Blues, o grande BB King, John Lee Hooker… são umas grandes influências minhas, as minhas bases, sem contar com o Hip Hop que já falei.
PERIGO
Eu também estou meio inclinado para o GODTELEX, sou muito eclético. Ou seja, escuto todo o tipo de Rap, do género Trap, Boombap e Drill, etc. Escuto muito Reggae, Eletrónica, Pop sertanejo, tudo. É isso aí.

Tens alguma história engraçada ou beef para partilhar?
GODTELEX
A gente podia falar sobre isto durante horas mas este telefone não tem capacidade para o ódio inteiro. Então, vou já resumir. O pessoal arranja beefs todos os dias e gostam de apontar a um gajo, estás a ver?, fazem dez vezes pior, gostam de apontar os defeitos dos outros e não sabem olhar para os próprios defeitos, são todos narcisistas, hipócritas e depois dizem que esta cultura é uma união. Coçam todos para dentro. E, pronto, esta é a minha opinião sincera relativamente às coisas que eu acho. Mas eu sou apaixonado pelo RAP e é com o que eu tenho que lidar, tenho que lidar com a poluição, é o que é.
KOYOTTE
História engraçada… Na minha segunda batalha levei um tau-tau do GODTELEX, em duplas, agora estou sempre a ganhar! (Risos)
PERIGO
Bem, eu não tenho muito beef não, mas eu tenho uma história engraçada. Na última Tribo, na minha batalha Perigo contra o Santos, o Santos ficou de cueca e pulou na piscina. Está tudo filmado. É isso aí.

Quero dar props a toda a gente que na sobriedade me admira, não aqueles que dizem mas aqueles que demonstram. Porque muitas pessoas podem dizer, o mundo está cheio de palavras, mas só as ações é que são sentidas. É o que o GODTELEX diz.

Battle rap has been growing and evolving significantly in Portugal and becoming a cultural phenomenon that reflects the diversity and richness of the rap and hip hop scene.
This style of competition where MCs face each other, seeking to surprise the opponent and win over the public, is characterized by improvisation, lyrical creativity and the ability to respond quickly.
The battles cover a variety of themes, from social and political issues to personal stories and critiques of society. Rappers use their lyrics to express outrage, tell about their experiences or even create humor, often incorporating cultural and local references that resonate with the public.
In addition to being a form of entertainment, rap battles also function as a platform of expression for youth, addressing issues such as inequality, racism and identity, and promoting a sense of community, where MCs and fans connect through music and art.
Digital platforms such as YouTube play a crucial role, allowing battles to be watched by a wider audience, contributing to the popularization of the genre and offering a stage for new talents to shine.
It was through Bugster that I first came into contact with this phenomenon and the Liga Knockout. Later I discovered the Roda o centro Instagram and several others spread across Lisbon, Setúbal and Barreiro. But it was in Almada that I got a taste for it, when I started watching the battles promoted by Gigantes à Margem (with Aleixo, Kota Phill and Caio in charge).
Every Friday, at the end of the afternoon, Praça São João Batista becomes an arena charged with a pulsating energy that infects everyone who passes by. To the sound of the beat or a cappella, two or more MCs show off their skills and spit bars (in two rounds) surrounded by a crowd that applauds, incites and even calls for blood! when the battles are fierce and call for a rematch to break the tie.
The beefs are settled at the end of the rounds and some bitter tastes serve as a catalyst for the following Friday, in the usual place.
It was at Gigantes that I met GODTELEX, KOYOTTE and PERIGO, my next interviewees. The interview, as expected, was recorded at Praça São João Batista, before another edition.
Get to know them and this freestyle culture a little better.
Tell us a little about yourself.
GODTELEX My name is GODTELEX, I'm 24 years old, I'm a street artist. Every day I go out to the street to do my hustle, sing, do karaoke, I'm a human jukebox (it's not just freestyle), I've been living from that for six months. And that's it, I'm a battle MC and I'm a nomad, I live from North to South of this country, I'm a national MC.
KOYOTTE

PERIGO
Hail, hail family. MC Perigo in the voice here. I'm an artist, battle MC, musician, composer, organizer of a battle in Brazil. I laugh here at the battles of Portugal. And that's it.
How did your name come about?
GODTELEX
My name came up the first time I showed up for battle. I presented myself at Free Punch, on the advice of Valério from Rapromiss. I introduced myself there and was going to write David Teles on the sheet and I saw that everyone had names that had nothing to do with it, that looked like game nicknames and I associated it with the game nickname I had in CS. So, it was like this, GODTELEX MC.
KOYOTTE
When the cops passed through the area, when a guy was a kid and made silver and acid bombs in the bottle, the cops passed by and a guy sent the bottles. And I also became known more because of Coyote, because of the cartoons, because he made the bombs against Papa Léguas. And it's an animal that I also identify with.
PERIGO... the story is long, but I'll make it shorter here. One day I was hanging out with my friends and then I went to use the bathroom and they rushed me because they all left before me, and I got out of there causing everyone to get mad and then one of the drivers of one of the buses that was there called me dangerous and then I became PERIGO forever.
When did you become interested in Rap and more specifically in Freestyle?
GOTELEX
About 2 years ago in January, when I crossed paths with Valério at Núcleo (on the A70) which was in Xabregas and was closed by the police. It was a big spot in the hardcore world that was shot down. I ran into Valério there on my birthday and Valério saw me there at Open Mic and advised me to go to the battles, because he said I rhymed well, and I started there.
KOYOTTE
My passion for Freestyle dates back to 2003/2004. At the time, Perigo Público was one of the first in freestyle (great props). There were few platforms, there was no YouTube, it was H2tuga, and I watched it since I was a kid. And only now, after many years, have I invested more in battle rap.
In relation to the artist, whether beatbox or ragga, I started when I was 14, out on the streets, I had showcases through Del Tó, people from Margem Sul too.
Battle rap I've been investing in for the last 5 months and I've really been enjoying it.
PERIGO
Well, since I was very young I listened to a lot of Rap, from my older brother, who at home only played Rap. So, I've been interested in Rap since I was very young. And I got involved in the battles at the beginning of 2018. I started rhyming as a joke, not really wanting anything, just because I really liked making a Rap, some rhymes, and it ended up that I got more of a taste for it and now I take it a lot more seriously than when I started.
From North to South, how many battles have you participated in?
GODTELEX
On 14 different battles. That's why I say I'm one of the busiest people in this country. I think there are 20 wheels or 21 and I don't think I've been to 5 or 6. I just haven't been to the South zone yet. If I go here and mention them individually I'll still get lost.
KOYOTTE
Props to Gigantes à margem. South bank of course, obviously. In 4 months, the first time I was solo champion was with Gigantes à Margem. Tribo, Capital Lisabona, Batalha do Alegro in Setúbal, Batalha do Barreiro and the Batalha da Estrutural too, boss. These are some of the ones that I am firmly there with.
PERIGO
Well, I've only been here for a short time. So, I can even send a shout out to the Batalhas that I've already stuck with: a shout out to the Batalha Gigantes à Margem, Batalha da Tribo, Batalha da Estrutural, Batalha do Barreiro, Batalha da Street Tag, Roda ao centro,... And If there's anything I forgot there, sorry. I know it was bad there. About 7 or 8 battles.
What do you consider your strengths?
GODTELEX
My strengths? Being unpredictable, that even I am fascinated by what I give in response. It has been more on the basis of response than attack. I think I'm a better MC when I'm in a disadvantageous position. So, yes, I feel stronger when I'm losing.
KOYOTTE
More based on posture. Vocalization also counts a lot. Ideology and references.
PERIGO
I believe my strengths are stage presence, rhyme delivery and a lot of content.
Where do you get inspiration for your rhymes?
GODTELEX
In me. And that's the point. I have no one to inspire me. I'm inspired by all the people around me and who motivate me, that's all. And I consider that I have a lot of general knowledge, so I can debate on various topics.
KOYOTTE
Anyone who sees my battles knows the references. And in relation to MCs I won't say it here either, who knows. But, hey, motivation is on the streets and in everyday life, in what I see others going through and even myself. That's where I hold on and motivate myself, in the day-to-day life on the streets and in each person's lives.
PERIGO
I am inspired by many rappers like me, also with black skin, such as Racionais, Djonga, BK’, among others. And I also have many references inside my house. So, I feel a lot of things that my father tells me and I believe that this is very clear. Because sometimes I say some things and many people don't understand where it stuck. But that's it.
How do you train to have this flow?
GODTELEX
I don't train, I work on this every day now. So, it's kind of my obligation at all times to improve step by step or, at least, try to maintain a level that I consider acceptable. When I'm singing with the speaker I can understand whether it's sounding good or not and have a greater perception of what I'm doing than when I'm rhyming with my own voice.
And I also don't have as many obstacles when I'm rhyming with the column, because I don't need to rhyme so loudly. So I can do better things.
KOYOTTE
In life, even if you have talent, without training there is nothing. You always have to train, you always have to rhyme, walk, even if it's shitting, cook, you always have to rhyme and catch up every day, even if it's with your troops on the street, wherever it may be. You always have to train, always, and it bears fruit.
PERIGO
Yes, I even agree with Koyote. Honestly, I remember Zuluzão’s phrase that “training is a game, a game is war”. So I'm always rhyming alone with myself.
I also have a challenge for myself, to rhyme an entire beat fluently without repeating too many words. This is training that I think is very good for me and important. And that's right, always train and you will always be improving.
What's playing on your playlist?
GODTELEX
All. I'm like... it has a lot to do with my mood. I can listen to Hard Techno, Hardcore, Trance, everything that is music. I'm passionate about music.
There is no bad music, because music is an expression of art, so I like listening to everything that is music.
KOYOTTE
Several. To be honest, Gospel, Blues, the great BB King, John Lee Hooker... are some of my biggest influences, my foundations, not counting the Hip Hop that I already mentioned.
PERIGO
I'm also a bit inclined towards GODTELEX, I'm very eclectic. In other words, I listen to all types of Rap, like Trap, Boombap and Drill, etc. I listen to a lot of Reggae, Electronica, Country Pop, everything. That's it.
What film, book or album do you recommend for a layman to get to know this culture better?
GODTELEX

Do you have any funny stories or beef to share?
GODTELEX
We could talk about this for hours but this phone doesn't have the capacity for all the hate. So, I'll summarize now. People get beef every day and they like to point out a guy, you know?, they do ten times worse, they like to point out other people's flaws and don't know how to look at their own flaws, they're all narcissists, hypocrites and then they say that this culture is a union. Everyone itches inside. And, that's it, this is my honest opinion regarding the things I think. But I'm passionate about RAP and that's what I have to deal with, I have to deal with pollution, it is what it is.
KOYOTTE
Funny story… In my second battle I was beaten by GODTELEX, in doubles, now I'm always winning! (Laughter)
PERIGO
Well, I don't have much beef, but I have a funny story. In the last Tribo, in my PERIGO battle against Santos, Santos stripped down to his underwear and jumped into the pool. It's all filmed. That's it.
